What's the answer?

teachinginhd

I sometimes take a step back and, as I contemplate the exponentially expanding to do list or the challenges I’m currently facing, ask the question ‘what is the answer’? What is the answer when education itself becomes the question. Is it best to teach this way or that way? How can I get these students to achieve, and all those other questions we grapple with daily. And there is, in actual fact, a short and simple answer: hard work. Of course embedded in that answer is the absolute antithesis of short; it is constant grinding, constant reinforcing, and constant support. It is perseverance, patience, and a stubbornness to give in. But what’s wrong with that? We know from History that great things do not come easily nor swiftly, and what is the education of our young people if it is not a great thing? If we are showing these characteristics to our students in our own day-to-day practice then we are succeeding. Indeed the single greatest lesson we can relinquish to our students is perhaps one of perseverance.
